Shalgam Ka Bharta | Spiced Turnip Mash

For the longest time, I've ignored Turnips(Shalgam) because I simply did not know how to use them. A couple of years ago, I stumbled a Bharta Recipe made out of mashed Turnips on Instagram & it looked so good & so easy.
Traditionally, a Winter dish in Punjab, This is an easy curry to go with chapatis for a weeknight dinner. I love the fact that this can me made in under 30 minutes with minimal Prep which makes it perfect for days when you are too lazy to cook something elaborate but you need a Veggie Fix
Serves 3-4
You Will Need:
- 4 medium sized Turnips/Shalgam
- 1 large Onion - finely chopped
- 2 Tomatoes - chopped
- 1 teaspoon Ginger-Garlic Paste
- 3/4 teaspoon Red Chilli Powder
- 1/2 teaspoon Garam Masala
- 1/4 teaspoon Turmeric Powder
- 2 teaspoon Kasuri Methi
- 1 cup Green Peas (Fresh or Frozen)
- 2 tablespoon Cooking Oil
- Salt as per taste
How To:
Wash & Peel the Turnips & chop them into big chunks. Pressure cook with a bit of salt for 1 whistle. Let the pressure settle down. Drain the excess water & put the turnips into a colander to the excess water to drain.
Mash with the help of a fork.
If using Fresh Peas, cook them in a bit of salted water for 6-8 minutes until cooked , Drain & set aside for later use.
If using Frozen Peas, add them directly at a later stage
In a heavy bottomed pan, heat oil. Splutter cumin seeds. Add ginger-garlic paste & sauté for 20 seconds
Add Onions, some salt, red chili powder, turmeric powder & sauté till the onions turn pink
Add the tomatoes, Green Peas & Garam Masala & cook till it becomes mushy & oil separates. This usually takes 4-5 minutes
Add mashed Turnips & mix well. Check for salt & let it cook on medium flame for 3-4 minutes. Turn off the flame
Garnish with fresh coriander before serving.
