It is a common practice to make Kadlekalu Usli on Ganesh Chaturthi for the evening Aarti. The Usli is offered as a Naivedya to Lord Ganesha & later distributed amongst visitors who attend the Aarti.
It is believed that Lord Ganesha loves Brown Chana. If you are unable to make any dishes for the Neivedya, just Soak Brown Chana & offer it to God
This method of making Usli is common in temples where Coconut, Green Chilies & Ginger is ground into a paste & later mixed with the tempering & Chana.
I like this recipe because, we don't have to worry about accidentally biting into a piece of Green Chilli :)
Serves 4-5
You Will Need:
- 1.5 cups of Brown Chickpeas/Kala Chana
- 1/2 teaspoon Jaggery Powder
- 2 tablespoon Cooking Oil
- Juice of Half a Lime (Optional)
- Salt as Needed
To Grind:
- 1/2 cup Grated Coconut
- A small Piece of Ginger
- 4-5 Green Chilies
To Temper:
- 1/2 teaspoon Mustard Seeds
- 2 Big pinches of Asafoetida
- 1 teaspoon Urad Dal
- 1 teaspoon Chana Dal
- A Sprig of Curry Leaves
Method:
Soak Kala Chana in plenty of water for a minimum of 6 hours or overnight
Pressure cook Chana with a little bit of salt for 2 whistles
Once cooked, drain the water & set aside
In a mixer, Grind together, Grated Coconut, Ginger & Green Chilies into a smooth paste without adding any water
In a pan, Heat Oil, Splutter Mustard seeds. Add Asafoetida, Urad & Chana Dal & sauté until the dal change color
Add the ground paste & torn Curry Leabes & sauté for a couple of minutes
Add the cooked Chana, Jaggery Powder & some salt
Mix well on low flame
Turn off the heat & add lime juice & mix well (I did not add line juice)
