Onion Uthappam Or Eerulli Dosae is a slightly thick Dosa  made using the usual Dosa Batter. A mixture of Onions & Carrots is slathered on top & cooked on both the sides until the onions get crisp & slightly caramelized

Onion Uthappam

After a couple of days of eating Dosa, I end up making either Paddu or Uthappa with the leftover batter.

I love Onion Uthappa/Eerulli Dosa for its charred Onions on top.

Earlier, My Uthappas never turned out that great until i learnt this trick of slathering the Onion mixture after the batter if poured & patting it gently so that the mixture sticks to the batter .. Watch the Video for a detailed description

How To Make Onion Uthappam | Onion Dosae

You Will Need:

  • Dosa Batter
  • 1 Onion - finely chopped
  • 1 Carrot - Grated
  • 4 Green Chilies - finely chopped
  • A small knob of Ginger - Grated
  • Cooking Oil

How To:

In a bowl, mix togther chopped onions, grated carrots, grated Ginger & Green Chilies & set aside

Heat a Cast Iron Tawa, Smear it with a bit of oil. & once the tawa is hot, wipe it clean with a wet kitchen towel

Pour a big ladleful of Batter onto the tawa

Take 2 handfuls of the onion-carrot mixture & spread it evenly on the dosa. As you are doing this, pat the dosa slightly to make it big

Drizzle Oil on the sides & on the top & cook on low-medium flame for about a minute

Gently flip the Uthappam & cook on the other side for 2 minutes

Don't be in a hurry to flip over again else, the onions won't be cooked

After 2 minutes, flip the uthappam gently & transfer onto a plate

Serve with Coconut Chutney/Chutney Pudi or Sagu

What Kind of Dosa Batter To Use?

I use the same Dosa Batter that I use to make regular Dosas. You can find the recipe Here

You can also Use Set Dosa Batter to make Uthappams, I will Share the recipe for Set Dosa Batter soon

NOTE:

Make sure you chop the Green Chilies really fine.

You can add finely chopped capsicum too

Make The Uthappams on Low- Medium Heat because they need to be cooked for a longer time for the onions to be cooked. High heat is going to burn the Uthappams
